The Greatest and Most Eminent Nuns in the History of Buddhism

Written by Bhikkhuni Dhammananda

On the Bhikkhu side, there were the Ten Great Disciples; parallel to that, there were also the Ten Great Female Disciples, the most outstanding and extraordinary Bhikkhunis in history. They came from many different social castes, and different personal positions or circumstances. Each of them received the Buddha’s teachings, energetically embraced the practice, and later attained the Arahat’s path and fruition.

And here are those Ten Great Holy Buddhist Female Disciples:

1. The Honored Lady Mahapajapati was the wife of King Suddhodana (Father of Prince Siddharta) in the Kapilavatthu Kingdom. She was the very first Bhikkhuni renouncing her worldly life, and the prima donna of the Buddhist Nuns Order.

2. The Saintly Khema was the favorite queen of King Bimbisara in the Magadha land. Buddha praised her as the nun Foremost in Wisdom, and she was acknowledged as the equivalent to Sariputra on the monks’ side.

3. The Honored Lady Uppalananna originated from a merchant family. She once was a most beautiful girl, well known and sought after in all kingdoms in her youth. When joined the Order of Nuns, she devoted her whole practice to develop her supernatural power and was given the title of Foremost in Spiritual & Ubiquitous Powers, equivalent to the Honored Moggallanna in the male disciples.

4. The Honored Lady Dhammadinna belonged in a high caste society; she was very gentle and virtuous. She became the Most Eloquent Dharma Teacher of the woman disciples.

5. The Honored Lady Patacara: before following in the footsteps of the Buddha, she was a widow full of misery and despondency. Her practice led to attaining Arahat status; she was dedicated as the Protector of Women in the Order of Bhikkhunis.

6. The Honored Lady Kisagotami was mentioned in the Dhammapada 278 verse 114 as the woman stricken with grief when her only toddler-son died; she came to ask Buddha for a miracle potion to bring her son back to life. After joining the Bhikkhuni Sangha, she was commended by Buddha as having the most Ascetic and Discipline Effort in the Nuns Order.

7. The Honored Lady Bimba, who once was among the close lady-in-waiting to Prince Sidhartha, came to the Order with a bestowed honor of achieving the Greatest Mindfulness among the woman disciples.

8. The Honored Lady Bhadda Kudalakesa. She was mentioned in the Dhammapada 101, the Therigatha 107-9, in Ap.II, 3:1, verses 38-46, and in A. I:14. She was a young, mischievious, and ebullient woman. Once entering the Order of Nuns, the became the Most Learned Scholar of the Dharma among all female disciples.

9. The Honored Lady Soma. Before becoming a Bhikkhuni, she was in constant desperation and depression. But her dedication and devoted practice helped eradicate all tainted infatuation and defilement, and she was praised as Foremost in Auspicious Quality and Perseverance in the Order of Nuns. (according to Ap.II, 3:6, verses 234-36, and Dhp. 112, Thig 102-6, and SN. 5:2)

10. The Honored Lady Nanda, a beautiful princess who was very selfish, conceited, self-centered, and constantly worried about her good looks and outer splendor. She practice to liberate from all of her bad qualities and was commended by the Buddha with Foremost in Insight and Concentration among the Bhikkhunis. (Thig. 82-86)

Asides from those previously mentioned Eminent Bhikkhunis, there were many female patrons and benefactors whom the Buddha often mentioned and applauded their dedication, devotion and practice.

1. Lady Visakha: she belonged in the wealthy upper caste family; she was one of the few most admired and respected ladies of her time. She was rich, very generous, kind-hearted and serviceable to the Sangha; she gave alms to the monks daily and ministered to all their needs.

2. Queen Mallika: she was very intelligent and courageous. She was known to help numerous people in many ways.

3. Queen Samavati: she used her loving compassion and infinite generosity to transform her brutal and sadistic husband - the King - into a gentle, good-natured individual who learned to believe and to seek the ultimate truth. Her life was like a key to unlock any mysterious door – in order to live peacefully despite difficult and desperate conditions. She represented the true example of how the practice of love, kindness, compassion and generosity can change, transform and undo things and situations for oneself and for others.

4. An unnamed young slave girl who was very intelligent, outgoing, and friendly. Her encounter with the Dharma had turn her into an erudite teacher of spiritual wisdom. Through her experience, we witnessed once again that the Teaching can be flexible and adaptable to different conditions and circumstances in life so that its dharmic influence would be beneficial and rewarding in all walks of life.

5. Sister Ambapali: she was a famed prostitute. After realizing the impermanent nature of everything in life, including beauty, splendor, glory, success, prosperity and wealth… she denounced all and joined the Order of Bikkhunis, and eventually attained Arahat status through diligent practice.
